Skyrim Guilds and Faction locations – How to join Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild, College of Winterhold and more

Skyrim is absolutely packed with quests. Although you are introduced to the game through the main story, you can completely ignore it almost from the beginning so you can find adventures in any direction you choose.

That said, certain questlines are worth paying attention to to get the most out of the game, many of which belong to Skyrim’s various guilds and factions, such as The Dark Brotherhood, the Thieves’ Guild, and the College of Winterhold, each with their own cast, play styles and rewards, so if you have no choice, we recommend choosing one of these quest lines.

Although you will hear whispers about them from the townspeople of Skyrim, they are not the easiest to locate. Here’s where and how you can start each major faction’s questlines. Although we will briefly describe what each one is about, from there we will leave you alone…

If you’re playing the 2021 Anniversary Edition, we’ve got explanations for features like fishing.

How to join the Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild, College of Winterhold, and other Skyrim guilds and factions

This is where to join each of the factions in the game. Note that there’s also Dawnguard, which was added as part of the game’s first expansion of the same name, which we described as part of our DLC page on how to join Hearthfire.

college of bards

A faction with only a handful of quests, joining a group of bards and scholars is at least a little different than everything else in the game. Just don’t expect much ‘lute’ for yourself.

To join, go to Solitude and search for Bards College; It is in the center of the city, at the fork that leads to the bridge, next to one of Skyrim’s houses, Proudspire Manor.

Inside, you should be greeted by Director Viarmo when you enter, who will give you your first mission.

The blades

This is a faction of dragon slayers that you will encounter as part of the main story. When you do, you’ll have the option to do a couple of additional quests for them – chat with Delphine for more information.

Civil war

Introduced at the beginning of the game, Skyrim is a battleground for the Imperial and Stormcloak factions. Technically it’s a questline, you have to choose between either side and play your part in its development. Feel free to start with either one, but keep in mind that “The Jagged Crown” indicates that you should choose either one.

Storm Layers: Go to Wildhelm and head to the Palace of Kings (it’s the huge structure more or less straight as you enter the city) and watch the conversation between Ulfric and Galmar unfold in the hallway. When he finishes, he talks to Ulfric, then to Galmar, to get this faction going.

Imperials: Head to Castle Dour in Solitude (you can find it roughly straight when you first enter from the overworld, then enter a door on the left) and chat with Legate Rikke inside. She will test you by going to Fort Hraggstad, starting the quest line.

The companions

One of the first factions you’ll encounter, if you follow the story, is more aligned with fighting type character roles. What makes them notable (spoilers ahead) is that throughout the questline you will also have the opportunity to become a werewolf.

To join, visit Jorrvaskr in Whiterun (it’s up the stairs next to the giant tree in the middle of town) and locate Kodlak Whitemane; We found him downstairs in Living Quarters chatting with Vilkas.

Winterhold College

Based in the northernmost city of Winterhold, they allow you to help out a wizard guild and as such, it helps to have some magical skills on hand. You will have to interact with this faction as part of the main story, but you can obviously ignore it and join when requested.

To join, head to Winterhold, go to the stone bridge in the middle of the city and try to enter. Faralda will stop you and tell you that only those who can offer something to the College can continue. She will ask you to cast a spell to prove your worth; If you say you don’t know, she will sell it to you for 30 gold. Throw it on the ground next to her and she’ll let you in.

If you’re not familiar with magic, equip it as a weapon (go to the main menu, then Spells) and attach it to your left or right hand. If you don’t have enough Magicka (if you’re not high enough level, for example), you can try to unlock Skills in that discipline to make it cheaper, equip an item that increases Magicka, or consume an item that increases Magicka, such as Elsweyr Fondue, so you can launch it and go ahead and get the ball rolling.

The Dark Brotherhood

This fan-favorite faction is a secret assassin’s guild that you may hear about on your travels, and is worth joining. While any character can join, it may favor characters with stealth builds.

To join, go to Windhelm and walk the streets until you learn that Aventus Aretino is trying to contact the Dark Brotherhood.

Head to the Aventus Residence (the easiest way to get there is to take the passage on the right before entering the Palace of the Kings) and make your way to the simple beginner’s lock. Talk to Aventus Aretino inside to start the ‘Innocence Lost’ questline.

Thieves Guild

As the name suggests, expect to join an underground gang of thieves who specialize in a variety of illegal activities.

To join, find Brynjolf in Riften. He can usually be found outside next to the market stalls in the city centre. It should automatically approach you when you approach and will begin the quest ‘A Chance Encounter’ which involves a robbery point to start the Thieves Guild quest line.
