National Public Service Day 2023: It is celebrated on April 21 of each year to recognize the work of officials participating in various public service departments in the country. This day is also a reminder for public officials to manage the country’s administrative machinery collectively and with dedication to the service of citizens. And there is no official theme to celebrate this day.
As we know, the Civil Service is the service that is responsible for the public administration of the country’s government. Does not include legislative, judicial and military personnel. Let us tell you that members of the civil service do not undertake any commitment to any ruling political party, rather they are the executors of the policies of the ruling political party.
The civil service in India consists of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and a complete list of all Indian services and the central services of Group A and Group B. April 21 is dedicated to the people of the Civil Service to commemorate their exemplary services and reflect on what they have done years ago. Also, on this day they make plans for the next year and how they will have to work for their respective departments.
National Public Service Day 2023: History
The word Civil Service dates back to British times, when the civil staff of the British East India Company were involved in administrative work and were known as “Public Servants”. Its foundation was laid by Warren Hastings and further reforms were subsequently made by Charles Cornwallis, for which he was known as the “father of public administration in India”.
The date of April 21 was chosen to commemorate the day in 1947 when Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Home Minister of Independent India, addressed probationary administrative services officers at Metcalf House in Delhi. He referred to civil servants as the “steel structure of India”. That is, officials working in different departments or at various levels of government act as supporting pillars of the country’s administrative system.
