How to stop the windmill in Baldur’s Gate 3

There are plenty of little interactions your party runs into in Baldur’s Gate 3, and one of the first requires you to stop the windmill and rescue the Gnome attached to it.

Or, if you’re feeling a bit more chaotic and evil, you can deal more damage to the poor Gnome tied to the Windmill’s blades if you wish.

Whichever alignment you’re currently playing, we’ve included where to find the Gnome’s backpack in Baldur’s Gate 3 below, along with how to stop the Windmill for those who want to help the Gnome.

How to stop the windmill in Baldur’s Gate 3

To stop the windmill in Baldur’s Gate 3, you need to enter the windmill and use the ‘brake lever’ on the left side of the tap on the left side of the stairs.

Just be very careful when choosing which lever to pull, as the “release brake” on the right side actually makes the blades spin faster and throws the Gnome far away. We opted to help the Gnome, so we don’t know if this will have significant consequences later on.

If you choose to do so, when you use the correct lever the blades will stop and you can now return to the Gnome and untie it from the windmill blades.

The Gnome (who we now know to be called Barcus) is understandably a bit grumpy about the situation, but he says that you can keep the contents of his backpack as a reward.

Where to find the Gnome’s backpack in Baldur’s Gate 3

The Gnomes’ backpack is in the basement of the windmill. To get to the basement, you need to interact with the wooden trap door next to the rubble at the back of the windmill, opposite where the windmill entrance is.

Open the heavy chest in the back to get the following rewards:

  • The Speedy Lightfeet (Boots – Medium Armor)
  • x1 Invisibility Potion
  • x1 healing potion

The rest of Barcus’ belongings are in the heavy backpack to the left of this chest, on top of a wooden crate.

Barcus’ belongings in the heavy backpack contain the following rewards:

  • x1 Satchel of Smoke Powder
  • x4 Gold
  • x2 red apples (camp supplies)
  • x1 Baguette (camp supplies)

You can collect these rewards in the basement of the windmill, whether you choose to help Barcus or not.
