How to add friends in Pokémon Go and how to raise Friendship levels for massive XP boosts

The addition of Pokémon Go Friends in 2018 opened the door to several features that have become mainstays of the game, including trading and sending gifts.

Creating a friends list is more than just catching Pokémon with your friends after school or work. It has become an integral part of every aspect of the game, from creating the best team for Go Battle League to leveling up by unlocking massive XP gains when you become the game’s Best Friends. And for those who simply want to catch them all, you won’t be able to do without the help of your friends, thanks to the addition of exclusive 7 km eggs.

So if you want to make the most of your Pokémon Go experience, you need to channel your My Little Ponyta and start working on those friendships.

What does friendship mean in Pokémon Go?

Pokémon Go Friends Page
Your friend’s trainer profile shows their level and stats, and allows you to trade and fight with them.

Fans of the Pokémon anime will know the importance of friendship: Ash’s partnership with his Pikachu is easily one of the most enduring friendships of our childhood, and his friendship with people like Brock and Misty is something that endures to this day.

In Pokémon Go, you have access to both versions of friendship. First, you can level up your friend with select Pokémon, although that’s not what we’re discussing here. For more information on the Buddy system, be sure to check out our dedicated Buddy Adventures page.

But what we’re going to talk about here is the kind of friendship between our humanoid heroes (or even Jesse and James, if you prefer). Making friends (and keeping them) has become an essential part of the game, with several important aspects built and hidden behind it.

The Friends system allows you to:

  • Track your friends’ progress, from their trainer level to the number of Pokémon caught and distance traveled.
  • Trade Pokémon with friends you are currently with.
  • Send and receive Gifts, which is the only way to get 7km Eggs and the exclusive Pokémon they contain.
  • Receive a higher attack bonus during gym/raid attacks and get more Premier Balls after a raid.
  • Spend less Stardust when trading and even make special trades for rarer Pokémon.
  • Become Lucky Friends and do Lucky Trades to get Lucky Pokémon.

There are many systems and benefits to cover, but let’s start with the basics: how to add a friend in Pokémon Go.

How to add friends in Pokémon Go and where to find your trainer code

Adding friends in Pokémon Go is incredibly easy – you don’t even need to meet a level requirement to do it!

However, it is important to note that you must be at trainer level 10 to trade Pokémon with other players.

Friends and social features are now available for all Trainer levels, now is the time to submit your first #PokemonGOfriend Order! Trading is now available for Trainers level 10 and above.

When you want to add a friend, go to your Trainer screen by tapping your trainer icon in the bottom left corner of the main screen, then tap the “Friends” tab in the top right corner.

Adding friends is an essential part of Pokémon Go

Next, tap “Add Friend” and you’ll be taken to a page with your 12-digit trainer code. Think of this like Nintendo’s Friend Code: you need to know the person and their code to add them, you can’t just search for Shuhei Yoshida and hope for the best.

Once you have your friend’s trainer code, enter it in the field and then send them a request. Once they accept your invitation, you will be friends; There is no need for both of you to send trainer codes to each other.

If copying and reading long strings of code seems like too much work, you can also click QR Code at the top right of the screen. This is where you can share your own QR code and scan it to your friends, speeding up the process. This is extremely useful when playing with a new group of Trainers.

For those who have linked their Facebook account to their Pokémon Go account, you will also be able to add friends through Facebook through this page.

It should be noted that, according to Niantic, Trainers who “require parental approval and registration through the Pokémon Trainer Club to play Pokémon Go will not be able to trade with other Trainers in the game.”

The Season of Adventure Abundance is here! Its first event is A Paldean Adventure, which sees the true launch of Gen 9 and the special research mission A Paldean Adventure. You can also work on the Timed Investigation: Master Ball mission and compete in Go Battle League. Be sure to compete in Shadow Raids, complete routes, use Daily Adventure Incense for a chance to encounter Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres. This incense can also give you encounters with other rare Pokémon in Pokémon Go.

How to increase Pokémon Go friendship levels

You can improve your friendship level with a friend in several ways, but either way it comes down to performing an in-game interaction:

  • Sending gifts.
  • Participate together in raids and gym battles.
  • Participate in trainer battles.
  • Trade Pokémon.

Keep in mind that you can only progress your friendship once a day, so once you’ve done one of the above activities, you’ll need to wait until the next day to increase it further, no matter how many times you trade, fight, or raid together. .

Pokémon Go Friendship Bonuses and How to Become Best Friends

Since you can only progress your friendship once per day per friend, although it will take several months to unlock the highest friendship level in the game. There are a total of four friendship levels to unlock:

Friendship level No days to unlock Bonuses
Good friend 1 Ability to trade and send/receive gifts
Great friend 7 3000 XP off Small Stardust (x0.2) on TradingSmall (x1.05) Gym and Raid Attack Bonus 1 Extra Premier Ball after raiding together
ultra friend 30 50,000 Medium XP (0.92x) Stardust Discount on TradingMedium (1.07x) Gym and Raid Attack Bonus 2 Extra Premier Balls after raiding together Engage in Trainer Battles at any distance
Best friend 90 100,000 XP Big Discount (0.96x) on Stardust at TradingLarge (1.1x) Gym and Raid Attack Bonus 4 Bonus Premier Balls after raiding together Chance to become lucky friends

Thanks to Bbbarna and Charales at The Silph Road for the specific statistics in the table above.

There are many valuable benefits, but the most significant is the huge 100,000 XP bonus that comes with Best Friend status. Along with a lucky egg, that’s 200,000 XP per best friend. If you can time these leveling ups right, you can sometimes start your monthly Community Day with a couple million easy XP.

In short, the higher your friendship level, the better the Stardust discount for trading and the better the Raid and Gym buffs.

To see the exact progress remaining, go to your friend in your friends feed, tap their avatar, then tap Hearts. Then he will tell you how many days are left until you can become a Great, Ultra, or Best Friend.

What else do you need to know about the Friends feature in Pokémon Go?

Pokémon Go friends list filtering
Filtering your friends list can help you determine who and when to send gifts.

There are many features of the Friendship feature that you should know about:

  • There’s a friends list limit of 400 people in Pokémon Go (up from 200 at launch), which is more than enough to start building friendship levels with both close friends and multiple raid groups.
  • Your friends list is now shared between Niantic Games, using your Niantic profile.
  • If you copy the Trainer Code message received from a friend and paste it into the Trainer Code box, you will simply post the code. Practical!
  • A red dot will appear on the home screen, above the Trainer icon at the bottom left of the screen, to notify you that a gift or friendship request is pending.
  • Friendship and gift notifications can be turned off in settings if you don’t want them to appear.
  • You can assign nicknames to friends, filter them, and sort them by name, nickname, friendship level, and gift status.
  • You can filter your friends by friendship level using the search terms ‘friendlevel0’ to ‘friendlevel4’. If you want to find friends you can still interact with, use the search term “interactable.” ‘Giftable’ and ‘lucky’ work the same way!
  • The friends feed takes a random recent activity and sends it to your friends. There is currently no way to “push” a specific update to your friends feed.
  • There are no leaderboards available in the Friends feed, so if you want to compare statistics, such as level, distance traveled, and creatures captured, you must enter each Friend entry manually.
  • There is currently no way to “opt out” of updating your friends feed or the information you share. Select your friends carefully if this worries you!
  • Similarly, unlike Gyms, your Pokémon friend’s chosen nickname will appear to your friends, instead of the Pokémon’s actual name. In short, this is a custom text field that Friends can see, so again, choose your Friends carefully as you might see something possibly unpleasant.
  • There is a medal associated with being best friends, the highest level of friendship. One best friend is Bronze, two are Silver, three are Gold and 20 are Platinum.
  • If you delete and then re-add a friend, the friendship level and bonuses you had previously accumulated will be reset.
  • There used to be a 1000 XP reward for being good friends with someone (the lowest level of friendship), but this was rumored to have been removed to prevent players from easily earning large amounts of XP by adding new friends and sending and opening gifts. .
  • Changing your Trainer nickname after adding someone as a Friend may affect the application of bonuses. Niantic recommends removing and adding your friend again to help alleviate this issue.
  • There’s also the preview of some UI changes when you increase friendship levels. “In the game, you’ll notice that the interface shows the growth of a friendship, building incrementally and deliberately as you unlock rewards that are even more meaningful,” says Niantic.

Good luck making friends in Pokémon Go and don’t forget to open your Gifts!
