What Is Instagram Threads? Twitter Rival Set to Launch Soon

The rivalry between Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg is getting quite intense. The tech giants recently challenged each other to a cage fight and the two have been continuously attacking each other. However, this rivalry is not limited to a physical fight.

And now, social media giant Instagram will soon have a Twitter-like app to be known as “Threads, an Instagram app.” The first look of this application was available in the iOS App Store and its launch is scheduled for July 6, 2023.

Elon Musk discussed this app in a tweet saying, “Thank goodness they are managed so sensibly.”

Twitter has faced a lot of backlash since it was acquired by Elon Musk. In a bid to generate revenue, the platform launched a new subscription service called Twitter Blue, which offers users a variety of features, such as the ability to undo tweets, customize their app icons, and access exclusive content.

Many Twitter users have criticized the subscription service, calling it too expensive and unnecessary. Others have expressed concern that Twitter is becoming too commercial and losing its focus on free speech.

Recently, Twitter also experienced a global outage, followed by Elon Musk imposing a limit on the number of tweets users can read per day and citing the reason as “too much data mining.” This Meta move could be a problem for Twitter.

What are Instagram threads?

The App Store describes it as: “Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to the trends of tomorrow. Whatever you’re interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favorite creators and other people who love the same things, or create your own loyal followers to share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world.”

To simplify things, Threads will allow users to follow and connect with their favorite creators and other people who love the same things. They will also be able to create their own loyal followers of people who share their interests.

This application will be linked to Instagram just like Facebook Messenger. According to The Verge, the app was discovered by Alessandro Paluzzi, a developer, who shared the first images of the app along with a Google Play Store link on Twitter. Now, the app does not show presence on Google Play Store.

Instagram has been testing this application for months with different celebrities and influencers. Meta’s chief product officer, Chris Cox, told The Verge “We’ve heard from creators and public figures who are interested in having a platform that is managed sensibly, that they believe they can trust, and that they can rely on for distribution.”

Unlike Twitter, this app will be secure and easy to use. Chris Cox also mentioned The Verge, “The company’s goal for the app was “security, ease of use, reliability” and making sure creators have a “stable place to build and grow their audiences.”

The CEO of Meta is quite known for his ability to take features from other platforms and integrate them into his own platforms, often making them successful. One of the most notable examples of this is the popular Reels feature, which launched in 2020 in response to the popular app TikTok.

After being acquired by Elon Musk, many Twitter rivals such as Mastodon and Bluesky have emerged. But these platforms did not gain much popularity. This new platform could be a ray of hope for people who are disappointed with Twitter services and are looking for an effective alternative to broadcast their messages and enjoy unrestricted freedom of expression.

In conclusion, only time will tell if this new platform will be a success or not. But witnessing Elon Musk’s history with Twitter, it’s worth keeping an eye on this Meta update.
