[Updated] Bank Holidays in March 2023 List

RBI has released the complete list of holidays for the month of March. There are only a few holidays in this month such as Panchayati Raj Diwas, Holi, Bhagat Singh Martyrs’ Day, Sarhul Ramnavmi, etc., apart from the second and fourth Saturdays. However, not all public and private sector banks will be closed on those days.

About March

Both the Julian and Gregorian calendars place the month of March as the third month of the year. Marcius, the first month of the oldest Roman calendar, is where the name March originates. Mars, the Roman god of war and ancestor of the Roman people through his sons Romulus and Remus, was the inspiration for the name. In the northern hemisphere, spring officially begins on March 20 or 21. In the Southern Hemisphere, autumn officially begins in September, which is the seasonal equivalent of March in the Northern Hemisphere.

Important holidays for March 2023

Chapchar Kut: Chapchar Kut literally translates as “a festival celebrated during the time when felled bamboo and trees are expected to be dried before being burned for smoke.” The Mizo ancestors could have all the time to themselves during this short period of rest.

Panchayati Raj Diwas: This day honors the birthday of the illustrious former chief minister of Odisha Biju Patnaik. When panchayat elections were finally held in the nation in 1992, Patnaik brought back Panchayati Raj.

Doljatra: Lord Krishna is the theme of the festival. On this day, a palanquin carrying an idol of Krishna is taken out in a procession. Since Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, a revered Vaisnava saint, celebrates his birthday on this day, Bengalis attach greater importance to the festival.

Holi: One of the most revered and appreciated festivals in the country is the Holi festival. It is widely regarded as the “festival of colors” and greatly improves people’s lives. Holi also strengthens the secular fabric of the nation and unites the society.

Second day of Yaosang: The festival, celebrated in Manipur, is a special version of Holi. The festival, held in the Meitei neighborhood, links the past and the present. Until the 15th century, Yaosang was a harvest festival. However, the festival was changed to a Hindu one dedicated to Krishna at that time because Hindu preachers were beginning to spread Vaishnavism in the state.

Martyr’s Day: This day is celebrated to honor the sacrifices made by Indian revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru. The British hanged the three young revolutionaries. They still serve as an example for the younger generation.

Sarhul: In the Indian state of Jharkhand, there is a spring festival called Sarhul. The festival is celebrated for three days, from Chaitra Purnima to the third day of the Chaitra month on Sukla Paksha. Pahan, the village priest, sacrifices flowers, fruits, vermilion, a rooster and Tapan (alcohol) to the Sun, the patron god and ancestor of the festival, to bring good luck to the village. Locals then dance while holding sal tree flowers. It serves as a reminder that a new year has begun. According to tradition, it also symbolizes the marriage of the Earth and the Sun.

Ram Navami: Ram Navami honors the Treta Yuga birth of Lord Ram to King Dasharath and Queen Kausalya in Ayodhya. On the ninth day of the month Chaitra, the first month of the Hindu lunar calendar, a spring festival is celebrated. People honor Lord Ram, also known as “Maryada Purushottam”, on this day by making offerings to him at temples and praying to him for guidance.

Ugadi: Beginning is what Ugadi means, also spelled Yugadi. While adi means “the beginning of something”, yuga denotes a period. Like any other New Year’s day, Ugadi means a new beginning for every person. The purpose of the festival is to welcome the new year with joy and the blessings of the gods. By performing rituals such as oil baths, house cleaning and worship, people mark the day.

However, using other banking services or conducting financial transactions is not a concern for customers, even on holidays. IMPS, NEFT, UPI, ATM services, net banking, mobile banking and other banking related services will be available on all March holidays 2023.
