Starfield Backgrounds explained

The backgrounds in Starfield are a crucial part when it comes to creating the character with whom you will live all your adventures and with whom you will tell your story. In addition to your traits, your experience is one of the first things you’ll need to decide, and possibly one of the most crucial, as it will determine what skills you’ll start with.

Creating your own character and choosing their background is just the beginning of your Starfield adventure. The action RPG will let you explore the expanse of space, 280 years after humans first set foot on Mars. From then on everything changed.

So far, we only have information from the June 2023 Starfield Direct and a few leaks, so here’s everything we know so far about character backgrounds in Starfield.

Previous Starfield Skills Explained

When you choose your Starfield experience, you’ll also receive three skills to start with. The skills you gain are determined by the experience you choose, and as of this writing, you can’t seem to change them.

Here’s a list of all the background abilities in Starfield that we know of so far from the Direct:

skill name Skill Description
astrodynamics Advanced technology is one thing, but it takes skill, patience, and a little love to get more power out of a ship’s gravitic drive.
Trade In the free market economy of the Established Systems, almost anyone with the right skills can open and run a successful business.
duel Considered by many to be a lost art, melee attacks with a melee weapon can often be more deadly than ranged combat when carried out by a skilled practitioner.
Gastronomy Access to all-new worlds means access to all-new ingredients, and there’s almost no limit to the delicious food and drink a talented chef can concoct.
lasers Personal laser weapons are widely used in the Settled Systems, and specialized training can greatly increase their effectiveness.
Medicine Only thanks to advances in medical training and technology has humanity been able to resist the main dangers of the galaxy.
Persuasion In the Settled Systems, the nuanced ability to listen and discuss can often accomplish much more than simply shoot first and ask questions later.
pistol certification Considering the popularity of the personal weapon in the Settled Systems, familiarity with such weapons is considered essential.
Swept Some people can find almost anything, and their success often depends on knowing how and where to look.
Security While the standardized digital lock mechanism is renowned for its security, any code can be cracked with proper training.
Stealth For a combatant who values stealth above all else, the ability to sneak up on a target undetected and kill with a silenced weapon is as terrifying as it is effective.
topography Humanity now has access to untold alien worlds, and the ability to decipher all of that data while on the ground has become an essential skill set.
Heist While not entirely honorable and certainly not legal, there are times when it is necessary to discreetly steal property from someone’s person.
Welfare By adopting an active lifestyle and good nutritional habits, one can improve their overall sense of health and even increase their life expectancy.
