Harry Potter Wizards Unite – Combat explained: How to battle, find Oddities and use Strategic Spells

Fighting is an important part of Harry Potter Wizards Unite.

Whether you want to take on a magical challenge or are tracking down oddities, you’ll be casting some combat spells.

Strategic spells can turn the tide of a tough battle, and a potion can give you the extra boost you need to knock out a monster, especially if that monster is a horned snake.

How to prepare for battle in Harry Potter Wizards Unite

Do you want to fight some magical creatures? Well, before you start casting those attack spells, you need to make sure you’re adequately prepared for combat.

First on your list should always be Spell Energy. Without Spell Energy you will be an easy target for your enemies, unable to attack as they slowly reduce your stamina. You can collect magical energy by dining at inns scattered around the map.

Spell energy and potions are essential parts of battle in Wizards Unite.

The inns have blue, green or pink roofs. Magical energy can also be found by completing daily tasks, and you will sometimes receive it as daily treasure. It is ideal to have between 20 and 30 magical energies before entering any battle, especially if you plan to take on a fortress alone.

Potions are also an important part of combat, as you can use them to enhance your spells and restore stamina during battle. You’ll definitely want to have a couple of healing potions stashed in your vault in case you get stuck in a sticky situation.

Remember: while you can use level 1 potions, you must reach level 4 to access potion brewing.

The best way to maximize potion brewing is to use Master Notes to reduce brewing time by 15%.

Where to find battles and oddities in Harry Potter Wizard’s Unite

There are two ways to engage in combat in Wizard’s Unite. The first is by participating in the magical challenges that can be found in the fortresses. The second is to locate Odditie Foundables.

A high-level Odditie Trace in the wild.

Oddities are one of the Foundables you can add to your Registry and their Trail is the image of a purple wand. Selecting an Odditie Trace won’t bring you a new Confusable to dispel, instead you’ll find yourself fighting a monster.

You could be fighting a mischievous pixie or a horned snake. No matter who your opponent is, their defeat will reward you with a rare fragment for your record.

As the name suggests, rarities have an unusual spawn rate. Unlike the other Foundable Traces, they only occur during specific times of the day. While the specific time for each Odditie is still up for debate, they generally seem to appear during the night, from 8 pm to 8 am

When hunting rarities, you will also want to pay attention to any rays of light that may come from the trail. These rays tell you the difficulty level of the monster you will fight:

  • Clues without a beam will be easy games, usually against a goblin.
  • Yellow beams are mid-level battles and can be against Erklings.
  • Red beams are high level battles and can be against vampires or horned snakes. These are the battles you’ll want to be prepared for, so make sure you have enough magical energy and potions.

How to fight in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite

The combat in Wizard’s Unite is nice and simple. To attack an enemy, simply select their model and you will enter battle. During a magic challenge, you cannot fight enemies that one of your teammates is already fighting.

A symbol (a white star with a blue background) will appear above your enemy. Drag your wand cursor over this symbol before the gold circle disappears to charge your attack. Once this meter has filled, you will be able to cast a spell.

On the left, preparing to attack an Erkling. On the right, defending himself from the jaws of a horned snake.

Casting a spell is done in exactly the same way as when you have to attack a Confoundable: use your finger to create the glyph displayed on the screen. Performing a spell correctly will allow you to make a considerable dent in your enemy’s hit points.

To defend yourself, drag your finger along the arrow that appears on the screen before your enemy attacks. A successful defense will decrease the amount of damage you will receive from the enemy attack.

If you want to use a potion, select the Potion button in the lower right corner. This will pause the battle, giving you enough time to select the potion you want to use, before jumping into the fight.

Before you begin your magical adventure, you’ll want to join a Hogwarts House in Harry Potter Wizards Unite. After that, you’ll need to learn how to fight so you can compete in magical challenges in fortresses or how to use greenhouses so you can perform potion master notes. You can also unlock Portmanteaus Portkeys and choose a profession between Auror, Magizoologist or Professor. Don’t forget to participate in the monthly Community Day event either!

How to use strategic spells and focus

A vital part of combat in Wizard’s Unite is the profession you choose: Auror, Magizoologist, and Professor. Each Profession has its own strengths and weaknesses, as well as a set of Strategic Spells that will give you an advantage over your opponent.

Strategic spells and focus can only be used during magic challenges. At the bottom of the Arena screen you will find the focus bar. Gathering focus by defeating enemies will allow you to cast strategic spells that will help you and your team complete the magical challenge. These have a variety of different abilities, from allowing you to heal your teammates to increasing the amount of damage you can deal to your enemies.

To use a strategic spell, drag the chosen spell from the bar at the bottom of the screen to your target. Up to 5 strategic spells can be used on each enemy and each strategic spell will cost a certain amount of concentration, so choose your spells wisely.

You can unlock strategic spells by increasing your experience in your chosen profession. This is achieved by unlocking lessons through the use of scrolls, spell books, and restricted section books.

Scrolls are found by completing Daily Assignments and leveling up a Challenge Rank or Findable Family rank. You gain spell books by leveling up your challenge family ranks. Currently, you can only obtain books from the restricted section by participating in limited-time events.
