The Swarm is a legendary heavy machine gun in Destiny 2. It initially arrived during the Season of the Chosen and returned as part of the Season of Challenge.
This heavy weapon focuses on hitting hard, rather than fast, emphasizing high impact and damage, rather than rate of fire.
This page will detail how to get The Swarm in Destiny 2 and what to look for on a The Swarm god roll.

How to get The Swarm in Destiny 2
The Swarm is a Nightfall weapon, available exclusively when it must be activated during the Nightfall Rotation.
Farming The Swarm is all about timing. Each week the featured weapon that is available at the end of Nightfall changes. In Season of Defiance’s Nightfall rotation, there are six different weapons that can spawn, including The Swarm.
Whether the weapon falls is a matter of luck, but you have the ability to tip the balance in your favor. Increasing the difficulty also increases the chance of the Nightfall weapon dropping, from Rare on the lowest difficulty to Common on the highest.
You can also equip the Ghost Prosperity (Vanguard) mod. This gives playlist attacks and Nightfalls a chance to drop an additional piece of legendary gear upon completion. This has never been confirmed to include Nightfall weapons, but anecdotally it seems to have an effect.
The Season of the Depths is here along with the Into the Depths quest. You too can know how to go fishing! Don’t forget to keep an eye on the Lost Sector and King’s Fall challenge rotation schedule!
God Swarm’s roll recommendation in Destiny 2
The Swarm is a monster that deals damage. It is exceptionally well-suited for taking out champions and DPSing bosses.
The Swarm is designed to hit hard with every shot. This makes him a good choice for clearing out a room of aggregates and is great for dealing concentrated damage to bosses. An ideal or ‘God Roll’ version of The Swarm uses continuous heavy machine gun fire to make this a more lethal weapon the longer it remains on a target.
Here’s our recommended The Swarm god roll in Destiny 2:
- Arrowhead breakage
- tactical mag
- Dynamic Roll Reduction
- target locked
- Impressive recovery
Arrowhead Break is a frequent favorite barrel and perfect for The Swarm. Controlling recoil makes it easier to maintain accuracy over long periods of sustained fire, and the increased handling makes it more viable for multi-target engagements as an additional clearing tool.
Tactical Mag is great. It improves stability, further improves accuracy, improves reload speed, which this weapon needs, and adds four rounds to the magazine. Shoot better for longer? Yes please.
Dynamic roll reduction is where things start to get really good. The longer you fire this weapon, the more accurate and stable it becomes. This is good against any tough target, but raid bosses in particular tend to have clearly set damage phasing. Accurately unloading all your bullets at the right time is huge for maximizing damage.
Target Lock is the ideal complement to Dynamic Sway Reduction. With this perk, the damage increases the longer your weapon stays on the target. With everything else designed to create sustained and accurate fire, this becomes extremely powerful against even the toughest of enemies.
Impressive Recovery is one of two selectable origin traits. Neither option is exceptional, but Stunning Recovery is great in certain situations. With it, stunning a champion will partially refill your magazine, increase recovery, and trigger health regeneration. It’s a very situational situation, but fighting Champions is exactly the type of situation where it’s good to have an advantage.
As usual, once you have your roll of choice, be sure to upgrade it to Masterwork to give it a stat boost, the ability to spawn orbs on multiple kills, and add the option for a kill tracker.
