Control – Old Growth: finding the Mold samples and defeating Mold-1

Old Growth is a side quest in Control, which you can start after you have completed Threshold.

Emily Pope will ask you to find Dr. Underhill from her university, who is studying the mold growing beneath Central Research. This will send you to the hidden underground world of the Research Sector.

There you will discover The Pit and the former Bureau employees who have been infected by the fungus. It seems Hiss has some competition when it comes to invading the Control Office.

How to Start Old Growth in Control

You can start Old Growth by talking to Emily Pope in the Board Room in Central Executive after you have started My Brother’s Keeper.

Before taking on this quest, make sure you have unlocked the Levitate ability by defeating Salvador in My Brother’s Keeper.

Locate Dr. Underhill under Central Research in Control

Emily Pope will ask you to find her friend, Dr. Underhill. She apparently has been studying the mold growing throughout the Oldest House.

To find it, you must head to Central Research, either taking the sector elevator or fasting through the checkpoints.

Either way, head to the lowest floor of Central Research. Look for black plants growing near a set of electric lights. In the corner near this plant life, you will find a hole.

Jump through the hole and use your levitation ability to reach the ground safely.

Welcome to El Pozo.

Head into the next room and use your Throw skill to place the electricity box on the socket next to the door you just passed through. This will reactivate the elevator, allowing you easy access in and out of The Pit.

Once you’ve done that, go through the door into the next room.

You can find a chest on the small outcrop to your right.

Head to the clearance level 4 door and speak to Dr. Underhill.

Collectibles to be found:

  • Research and records – Research – Threshold utility countertest
    • (On the desk in the back of Dr. Underhill’s lab.)
  • Correspondence – Unofficial – Underhill: Record
    • (On a cart on the right side of Dr. Underhill’s lab.)
  • Investigation and Records – Investigation – Mold Threshold
    • (On the desk to the left of Dr. Underhill’s laboratory.)

The collectible locations: Threshold Utility Countertest, Underhill: Checking In, and Mold Threshold.

Collect five mold samples for Dr. Underhill in Control.

Dr. Underhill will ask you to find five different mold samples. Head to the door on the right, go up the stairs and through the door to go deeper into The Pit.

Follow the hallway to the right and go down the stairs to find a chest and a collectible.

Going through the other door will take you to the main chamber of the Well.

Kill the first two fungal-infected people you encounter and you’ll find yourself on a plateau overlooking The Pit.

The Pit is a very dangerous place, so it is best to eliminate your enemies before continuing. Stay on the plateau to do this.

There are two more mushroom-infected people in the lower right corner of the house, but the creatures you’ll want to direct your firepower toward are the live mushrooms. These will spit poison at you, leaving you dead after four or five shots depending on your health.

The best way to kill them is to shoot them with your service weapon and raise your shield when you see the purple poison approaching. If you haven’t unlocked the shield yet, complete the quest A Good Defense.

There are four of these live mushrooms in total. Each one looks like a slimmer version of the people infected by the fungus.

Whatever you do, don’t touch the purple ground.

The best order to find the samples is:

  • Type E
  • Type D
  • Clear checkpoint
  • Write a
  • Type B
  • Type C

Collectibles to be found:

  • Case Files – Altered Articles – Pink Flamingo Supplement
    • (At the bottom of the right hallway before entering the main chamber of The Pit.)

How to find The Pit checkpoint in Control

Once you’ve made The Pit semi-safe. Head to the ladder directly in front of the plateau you are standing on.

Go up these stairs and through a door to find the checkpoint.

Clear it and you’ll have a fast travel point to the Well whenever you want.

Where to find Type A: It grows near fresh corpses in Control

In the room with the Checkpoint, head behind the pillar and you will find a small room containing Type A.

If you have problems, follow the corpses.

The location of Type A.

Where to find type B: grows near the bathrooms in Control

In the far left corner of the Well’s main chamber you will see an opening with a bathroom sign next to it.

Go through this opening and you will find yourself in what used to be a bathroom. In the left corner you will find all the bathrooms grouped together.

Climb up this toilet mold block and you’ll find yourself looking at Type B growing on a toilet.

Go up the toilet block to reach Type B.

Where to find Type C: grows near televisions in Control

After picking up Type B, continue down the hallway from the previous bathroom.

Continue past a desk and up some stairs until you find a door labeled “Lab 05.”

Enter this lab and you will find the sample growing in front of a television.

Head to the door of Laboratory 05 to find Type C.

Where to find Type D: grows near stairs in Control

Head to the ladder directly outside the plateau and enter. You will find Type D under the stairs.

There is also a chest nearby.

Talk to Dr. Underhill at Control

Once you have collected all the samples, take them to Dr. Underhill.

She will give you a mysterious pill and tell you to investigate the origin of the mold.

Investigate the well in control

Return to the main chamber of the Well and descend through the Well in the middle of the room. It’s the huge hole in the ground with purple smoke coming out of it.

Kill the two host mushrooms you find. You can also access a chest and collectible by knocking down the pile of rubble hiding a door. This will take you to a small office area where you can levitate up to the ledge to find the chest.

If you turn left, you will go deeper into the pit. Continue down the hallway to find a chest, killing any fungus-infected people you come across. Follow the corridor to the left and you will come to another corridor, which appears to have roots coming out of it.

Go down this corridor and kill the mushrooms you find there.

Grab the chest in the corner near all the mannequins, before jumping through the hole to fight Mold-1.

Collectibles to be found:

  • Multimedia – FBC Recordings – Threshold Record 1
    • (On the ground when you descend to the lowest level of The Pit).
  • Case Files – Altered Articles – Global Supplement
    • (In the room you first enter at the bottom of the well, knock down the noise to your right to open a door, then levitate to the upper level and take it out of the desk.)

    • (On the floor of the room before fighting Mold-1).

The locations of the collectibles: Threshold Log 1, Globe Supplement, and Threshold Log 2.

How to defeat Mold-1 in Control

Before fighting Mold-1, make sure you have your best Headshot Boost mod equipped with your preferred weapon form. You will be aiming directly for Mold-1’s head, so this will give you an advantage over the creature.

Levitating through the hole will take you to Mold-1’s house.

Wait for Mold-1’s health bar to appear at the bottom of the screen, because any damage you do to Mold-1 before this won’t count.

Mold-1 will attack you by spitting poisonous bullets and throwing one of its arms at you. You can avoid these attacks by levitating around the room or hiding behind one of the large blocks.

The best way to attack Mold-1 is to alternate between using your Throw powers and then hitting him with your Service Weapon. Aim for Mold-1’s larger, central head to deal the most damage. You’ll also want to try to throw as many of the mushroom balls hanging from the ceiling at Mold-1 as possible, as they will deal additional damage.

There is a way to kill Mold-1 without taking any damage. When you enter Mold-1’s room, you will land behind a large cuboid. If you go to the right side, to the point where you can attack Mold-1, but are still partially hidden by the block, Mold-1 will not attack you. This will allow you to simply kill Mold-1 without taking any damage.

Try to stay here to avoid being attacked by Mold-1.

Return to Underhill in control

Once you’ve killed Mold-1, go through the door at the back of the house. If you can’t find it, it’s surprisingly well hidden, just run around the edge of the room.

This is the door you are looking for.

Go through this door and clear the checkpoint you find. There is also a chest and a collectible in this room.

Use the checkpoint to fast travel back to Central Research and then return to Dr. Underhill the same way you found her.

Talk to Dr. Underhill and she won’t be too happy that you killed Mold-1.

Collectibles to be found:

  • Multimedia – FBC Recordings – Threshold 3
    • (In the dark corner of the room with the Checkpoint after Mold-1).

The location of the collectible: Threshold 3.
