Amarinder Singh was born on March 11, 1942 in the Punjab province of British India. He was born in a Punjabi Jatt Sikh family of Sindhu Clan to parents Maharani Mohinder Kaur and Maharaja Sir Yadavindra Kaur of Patiala. His family belongs to the famous Phulkian dynasty.

Captain Amarinder Singh attended Loreto Convent School in Shimla and Lawrence School before going to Doon School in Dehradun. He is married to Preneet Kaur, who served as a Member of Parliament and was Minister of State in India’s Ministry of External Affairs between 2009 and 2012. They have a son, Raninder Singh, and a daughter, Jai Inder Kaur.

Amarinder Singh served in the Indian Army between June 1963 and December 1966. He joined the army after graduating from the National Defense Academy and the Indian Military Academy. Singh was commissioned in the Sikh Regiment and served as Aide-de-Camp to the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Command, Lieutenant General Harbaksh Singh from the December 1964 period.

  2. Later in 1984, Singh resigned from the Congress in protest against the army’s action during Operation Blue Star. He joined Shiromani Akali Dal and was elected to the state legislature from Talwandi Sabo.
  3. In 1992, Captain Amarinder Singh broke away from the Akali Dal and subsequently formed a splinter group Shiromani Akali Dal (Panthic). It later merged with the Congress Party in 1998, after Sonia Gandhi took charge of the party.
  4. Singh served as president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee on three occasions (1999 to 2002, 2010 to 2013 and 2015 to 2017).

First period

Captain Amarinder Singh became Chief Minister of Punjab in 2002 and continued to serve until 2007. Later, in September 2008, during the tenure of the Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party-led government, Singh was expelled for irregularities in the land transfer related to Amritsar Improvement Trust.

However, in 2010, the Supreme Court of India announced that Singh’s expulsion was unconstitutional as excessive.

Second period

The Congress Party on 11 March 2017 won the 2017 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections under the leadership of Singh. He was sworn in as the 26th Chief Minister of Punjab and his oath of office was administered by the Governor of Punjab.

During his second term as Chief Minister of the state, Captain Amarinder Singh was criticized by a Congress faction led by Navjot Singh Sidhu for being inaccessible to Congress MLAs.

Later on 18 September 2021, he resigned as Chief Minister due to ongoing talks suggesting that Punjab Congress MLAs lacked confidence in his leadership.
