Asia’s First Paper Mill: Nepa Mill renovated after spending 469 crore rupees

Asia’s first paper mill revived: Nepa Mill, considered Asia’s first paper mill, was inaugurated in 1956 by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. It is situated in Nepanagar, an industrial township located in the Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh.

Manufacturing at the factory was stopped after renovation work began in 2016. The renovation work was eventually completed at a total cost of Rs 469 million.

Commercial operations resumed at Nepa Mill today and the inauguration was conducted by Heavy Industries Minister Mahendra Nath Pandey.

As a result of the renovation, the mill has gained new life and can begin commercial operations with new machinery installed.

The reactivation work was carried out thanks to the collaboration of 6 companies.

How will it benefit production?

When the factory was launched, the production capacity was 30,000 tons of paper per year. In recent years, production capacity increased to 88 thousand tons of paper per year.

With the new machinery installed, production is expected to reach 1 Lakh tonnes per year.

Job opportunities for young people

With the reactivation of the paper factory, local youth will have employment opportunities. It is said that around 1000 vacancies will be filled for the various posts.

In addition to job opportunities, it will help reactivate the city’s economy.

Two types of paper are printed at Nepa Mill: news printing and writing. The quality of newsprint is 45 GSM, while that of writing printing papers is 60-80 GSM.

Waste paper is used as raw material to produce newspaper printing paper. On the other hand, old books, good quality old office papers and recyclable paper are used as raw materials for printing paper.

History of the Nepa mill

Nepa Mill was Asia’s first paper mill and India’s only paper mill until 1981; it was known as Kashi of Paper or Hub of Paper Printing.
