All About ISRO’s Space Tourism

All about ISRO space tourism.

Pay a lot of money and you can travel through space. Yes, you read it right. ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization), India’s national space agency, has plans to develop a special spacecraft that can transport civilians to outer space and back. A few months ago, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said that to develop capabilities for space, ISRO is testing human flight capability in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe) also aims to encourage participation of private players in large-scale space operations, including space tourism.

What is space?

Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe) is an independent single window organization under the Department of Space, Government of India. The Center monitors and facilitates space operations in India. To determine “how effectively to utilize India’s space resources and scale up space activity”, IN-SPACe will serve as a liaison between ISRO and private sector companies.

In collaboration with ISRO, the center will assess the expectations of private sector companies, including educational institutions, and work to accommodate those requests. Sivan asserted that both ISRO and private sector organizations would be subject to the centre’s decisions. ISRO used to rule the space industry but will now focus on its core research and development function.

India and global space tourism

In recent years, the space tourism industry has exploded, dominated by private aerospace companies.. SpaceXFounded by billionaire Elon Musk, it is the leader in the space tourism market thanks to its dragon space capsule, which offers tourist trips in zero gravity. He new pastor Jeff Bezos’ spaceship blue origin, which launches from West Texas and carries passengers on short trips into space, is another major competitor in the industry. The flights, which last about ten minutes, allow guests a glimpse of Earth from above.

What is India doing?

Space tourism in India is years behind and the first manned Gaganyaan mission, primarily a scientific mission to demonstrate indigenous capability to undertake human spaceflight missions, is yet to be launched. The human mission is expected to launch between 2024 and 2025 if all test missions are successful.

For now, space tourism is a dream, which to become a reality, ISRO must first ensure certain things: the perfect completion of the Gaganyaan program, many iterations of it, the development and successful launches of a reusable rocket intended for tourist transportation and the ensuring that all systems are reliable and affordable to be financially viable. Indian space tourism is predicted to be viable around 2028. We will have to wait and see what happens until then.
