The best way to earn gold in Skyrim

While you can of course earn a self-sustaining amount of money in Skyrim simply by asking questions and generally staying busy in the world, there are also some more specific methods you can employ that will dramatically improve your ability to earn gold.

First of all, in this section, we will guide you through the method that we consider to be more effective than all the others, excluding cheats and exploits. It comes in the form of a crafting loop, which you can perform using a combination of alteration, smithing, enchanting and alchemy skills to potentially earn thousands with a fairly minimal investment. And yes, we’re aware how much this sounds like the first line of a particularly uninventive spam email, but bear with us: it actually works.

Technically, there are two ways to use this particular method. Here is the first one, complete:

  1. Using our guide to maximizing your enchanting, blacksmithing, and alchemy skills, take those crafting skills to the highest level.
  2. Create, buy or find some potions that strengthen your enchanting ability.
  3. Drink one and with your level 100 Enchantment create a full set of Fortify Alchemy clothing.
  4. Put on your new clothes and with them and your level 100 Alchemy, brew some stronger Fortify Enchanting potions.
  5. Repeat, drinking the potions and using the clothing, until you reach the 29% limit of the Fortify Alchemy enchantment for each item of clothing and the 32% Fortify Enchantment potions.
  6. Now, put on your Fortify Alchemy clothes, this time brewing Fortify Smithing potions.
  7. Wear the Fortify Smithing clothing and drink the Fortify Smithing potions (previously you could only do the potions part because there is no Fortify Enchanting enchantment).
  8. With them equipped, craft Dragon Bone Daggers – they only require 1 Dragon Bone (obtained by killing dragons, which you can do by simply wandering around Skyrim) and 1 Leather Strip to craft, but they are worth 600 gold each. Making sure your potions are still valid, upgrade these Daggers to the max at the whetstone.
  9. Grab another Fortify enchantment potion and now enchant those daggers with an enchantment from the Banish Undead school, which is the highest value enchantment in the game.

The alternative method to this is, instead of crafting Dragonbone weapons, forge jewelry. This is possible to do much earlier in the game thanks to the immediate availability of the Transmute Mineral Ore spell in a small bandit cave, which allows you to convert iron ore into gold ore and, in turn, forge two gold rings with each gold bar you find. smelt. Here is the process for that:

  1. Max out just your Enchanting and Alchemy skills, and create max-level enchantments and potions with the cycle above.
  2. Mines gold ore from the Kolskeggr Mine, south of Lover Stone, near Markarth. Please note that mines are reset approximately once per month in-game when marked as “deleted”; EITHER
  3. Mine iron ore from one of the many iron ore mines in Skyrim and purchase it from any gunsmith or general goods merchant. Use the Transmute Mineral Ore (Alteration) spell to convert it from iron to gold ore. If you are low on magic, quickly wait 1 hour after each cast to replenish and repeat. The Spellbook can be found in Halted Stream Camp, another small bandit camp, northwest of Whiterun.
  4. Convert gold ore into gold rings x2, which are the highest value jewelry, except for any precious gems you have on hand.
  5. Using the potion enchanting method above, enchant them with the Fortify Sneak enchantment, which is about double the value of the closest competitor, Fortify Two-Handed.

A few notes on the above methods, just in case:

  • You can create even strong enchantments and potions with the Necromage perk if you become a Vampire Lord and with the four Relics of Ahzidal from the Dragonborn DLC.
  • Soul Gems, both empty and full, can be purchased in large quantities from court wizards in the various halls of Skyrim’s cities and towns. Giants, Falmer, Wolves, and Mud Crabs are good choices for Souls of various sizes.
  • An enchantment’s value will decrease the more times you create it, even if you haven’t sold any yet, in which case, keep an eye out for the next most valuable enchantment, like Two-Handed Fortify to get gold rings, and trade it in when the value drops to that level.
  • More valuable weapons than Dragon Bone Daggers can be crafted, but they will generally exceed the amount any shop owner can offer to purchase them from. If they still have two, switch to Iron Daggers, Gold Rings, or invest in the shops or buy crafting items from them first. Stores are replenished every 48 in-game hours, which is about the time it takes to fast travel between each major city individually, buying and selling at each store in a loop.
  • Much more valuable and powerful potions and enchantments can be created using a Restoration Potion glitch, which we have not detailed as it may be removed from the game in the future, and is a potentially revolutionary exploit rather than an intended mechanic. .

Other ways to earn gold and make money in Skyrim

If you want to make money in Skyrim without having to max out your crafting skills first, luckily there are several options available to you. Questing, looting, and generally just doing things in the world will provide you with a small amount of income that will be enough to cover the costs of your health potions and occasionally new weapons.

But there are some more specific quests, stories, and methods you can try, and here we’ll explain some of the best non-max level crafting methods:

Get marry:

Yes, it turns out that getting married can earn you a nice regular income, and your spouse offers you 100 gold a day, every day, once you’re married. Take a look at our guide on how to get married in Skyrim for more details on how to do it.

Crafted Potions:

Another crafting option, we know, but this way it doesn’t require max level skills. Instead, you can do the following:

  1. Buy all ingredients from an alchemist.
  2. Use your alchemy table to craft as many potions as possible from those ingredients.
  3. Sell the potions to the alchemist, who should receive a decent amount of money purchasing their ingredients.
  4. Move on to another alchemist and repeat.

The downside here is that it will take you some time to get familiar with the best recipes, but at least you’ll gain some great knowledge along the way. You can also use an alchemy calculator like this one to calculate the optimal potions from your current inventory, to help.

Thieves and Thieves Guild Missions:

The Thieves Guild, being what it is, can generate a good amount of money, but completing the main questline also takes quite a bit of time.

We’ve put together a guide on how to join Skyrim’s guilds and factions, including the Thieves Guild, and once you’ve done so, you can talk to Vex or Delvin Mallory to do some repeatable random jobs, which involve stealing certain items and returning. with the one who gave you the mission to get a reward.

You can also usually clear a good amount of loot from each job by stealing and sneaking to find other items in the location. Stolen goods can only be sold at several fences, one of which stands out at Honningbrew Meadery, south of Whiterun.

Finally, Pickpocket in general is a very useful skill for making money. We’ve put together a guide to maximizing Pickpocket and other Thief skills, and overall, once you reach a decent level, it can be used in almost any situation.

Almost every NPC in Skyrim, for example, will have at least one item of value on them (usually jewelry) and stealing one from every NPC you meet can very quickly net you a small fortune in sellable stolen goods, which can also be enchanted for additional profits with the previous methods.

If you’re on PC, we have a list of console commands and cheats, and you can learn about the remastered version and how to install mods with our Skyrim guide. Finally, for Switch owners, we explain Skyrim’s amiibo support to help unlock special Zelda-themed items.

The Dark Brotherhood:

Finally, completing the main Dark Brotherhood questline will result in a whopping 20,000 gold reward, in addition to the money you’ve earned from each quest along the way.

At around 500 coins per side quest reward, with other items such as Muiri’s Ring also as bonuses, the Dark Brotherhood can be extremely fruitful in terms of cash.

The downside is that it’s time-consuming and requires enough combat and stealth skill to pull it off without racking up very high rewards in Skyrim. However, if you are confident in your assassination skills and want to keep playing while earning your gold, this is the best way to do it.

You can find out how to join the Dark Brotherhood in our guide to joining each of Skyrim’s guilds and factions.
