Resident Evil 7 Not a Hero walkthrough: A guide to completing Chris Redfield’s DLC chapter

Resident Evil 7 Not a Hero is a free download bonus chapter released almost a year after the debut of the main game.

The DLC, in which you play as familiar face Chris Redfield, aims to tie together some long-running series threads into Resident Evil 7’s seemingly isolated story.

It also takes place after the story ends, so expect spoilers for the main game, as well as some of the most challenging combat scenarios we’ve seen yet.

This Resident Evil 7 Not a Hero walkthrough will provide a complete guide to completing the story and tips for surviving outside of the main step-by-step instructions.

Although there is a central axis that shows branching paths, like the main game, the DLC is linear and follows the following order:

Resident Evil 7 Not a Hero Guide to Play the Additional DLC Chapter

Although the DLC adopts many of the mechanics and enemies you’ve encountered in the main game, Chris Redfield (and returning antagonist Lucas) offers some new tricks.

  • One of the first new mechanics is surviving in contaminated areas. If you are low on oxygen, simply retreat to a safe area to replenish your supply and continue exploring.
  • Chris has a useful punch attack when enemies are stunned, with an on-screen message letting you know it can be performed. Use it whenever you can to save ammo.
  • You will discover in the story a new, more powerful variant of the Molded that requires specific ammunition. You’ll encounter this over the course of the story, but it’s very sparse, although the game does tend to give you just the right amount of difficult challenges ahead of you. Our previous tutorial specifies where to get said ammo and when to use it. Otherwise, everything else, including the final boss, can disappear in regular rounds.
  • Combat is worth avoiding whenever you can get away with it, helping you save precious ammo and, in certain circumstances that require it, time.

  • As mentioned above, although there is a central hub (the appropriately named Central Cavern), the story is fairly linear. It branches out from three shutters, so if you pass one and quickly realize you can’t explore further, you’ll need an upgrade from somewhere else first.
  • As with the main game, heading into “safe” areas will cause enemies to disappear. So if you’re exploring the shutters and feel overwhelmed early on, retreating to the Central Cavern can give you a break.
  • The duration of the Not a Hero DLC is around 90 minutes to two hours on the first playthrough.

Also, as mentioned above, the Not a Hero DLC takes place after the main story ends, so for spoiler reasons it’s worth waiting until you’ve seen the ending first.

Additionally, this offers some of the toughest combat challenges to date, so fully understanding the mechanics upon finishing the game will serve you well.

Resident Evil 7 Not a Hero Unlockables

If you want to continue playing Not a Hero once you’re done, there are a few extra things you can unlock.

  • Normal Unlockables: A harder Professional difficulty (which has its own Trophy/Achievement) and Thor’s Hammer Sight B.
  • Pro Unlockables: Infinite Ammo, Easy Deflect

Please note that the above will only work in the DLC and will not carry over to the main game.

There are also ancient coins and files to find. While there are no trophies or achievements to unlock by finding them, they do give you permanent upgrades (find the bird cages on the stairs of the Central Cavern) and additional story information, respectively. The tutorial above shows all of this as we go.
