National Mathematics Day 2022: Celebrated on December 22 every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of legendary Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. The day recognizes and celebrates his works. On this day, mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan was born in 1887 in a Tamil Brahmin Iyengar family in Erode, Tamil Nadu.

In 2012, former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, paid tribute to Srinivasa Ramanujan at a function organized to mark the birth anniversary of the great mathematician Srinivasa Iyengar Ramanujan in Chennai. December 22 was declared National Mathematics Day. Thus, on December 22, 2012, National Mathematics Day was celebrated for the first time throughout the country.

How is National Mathematics Day celebrated?

National Mathematics Day is celebrated in various schools, colleges, universities and educational institutions in India. Even the International Society of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and India agreed to work together to spread the learning and understanding of mathematics. Along with this, several measures were taken to educate students in mathematics and spread knowledge to students and pupils around the world.

NASI (The National Academy of Sciences of India) is the oldest science academy situated in Allahabad. To celebrate National Mathematics Day, NASI conducts a workshop on Applications of Mathematics and Ramanujan. The workshop is attended by popular lecturers and experts in the field of mathematics from all over the country. National and global speakers discuss Srinivasa Ramanujan’s contribution to mathematics.

The two-day workshop on the topic “History of Indian Mathematics before 16th Century” was organized on December 30 and 31, 2019 at NASI Headquarters, Prayagraj.

The discussion at the workshop covered the topics mentioned below:

– Indian contribution during the Vedic period

– Indian contribution during the classical period

– Indian contribution during the medieval period.

About Srinivasa Ramanujan and his contributions to Mathematics

Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on December 22, 1887 in Erode, India, and died on April 26, 1920 in Kumbakonam. His family was from the Brahmin caste and lived in poverty. At the age of 12 he acquired knowledge in trigonometry and, without anyone’s help, developed his own theorems and ideas. Do you know that it was only at the age of 15 that he obtained a copy of George Shoobridge Carr’s Synopsis of Elementary Results in Pure and Applied Mathematics?

He had spent his childhood days with great difficulties in poverty. She used to borrow books and read books from friends at school. When he was young, he accepted the job of a clerk to meet the household’s financial needs, and when he had time he used to solve mathematics questions and work on various types of theorems. An Englishman once saw those pages, was impressed, and took a personal interest. He sends Srinivasa Ramanujan to see Hardy, the Oxford University professor. He then recognized the talent hidden in him and subsequently became famous throughout the world.

His papers were published in the Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society in 1911. He had compiled around 3900 results, mainly identities and equations, and that too on his own without anyone’s help. Several results are original and novel, such as the Ramanujan Prime, the Ramanujan Theta function, partition formulas, and simulated Theta functions. These results further inspired several other investigations and opened new fields of work. He discovered his theory of divergent series and developed the Riemann series, elliptic integrals, hypergeometric series, and functional equations of the zeta function. Let us tell you that the number 1729 is known as the Hardy-Ramanujan number.
